(1, 1.5 or 2 hours)
Covers overcurrent protection principles, including Friemel’s Laws of Overcurrent Protection. The ratings of overcurrent protective devices, construction and types, and time current characteristic curves will be discussed. In addition, performance characteristics such as current limitation will be reviewed, with video test footage. Finally, a summary of the benefits of modern, current-limiting fuses will be presented.
NEC code changes
(1, 1.5 or 2 hours)
Covers some of the critical NEC changes in recent editions with an emphasis on changes related to overcurrent protection. Topics covered include changes to service entrance equipment, arc energy reduction, selective coordination and more.
(30 or 60 minutes)
Covers the various UL fuse Classes of UL low voltage fuses, including branch circuit and supplemental fuses. Detail on each fuse Class will be provided, such as ratings, applications and uses. Justification for choosing one fuse type over another will also be covered.
(1, 1.5 or 2 hours)
Covers the basic code requirements for selective coordination per the latest NEC. Examples will be given to selectively coordinate with fuses, circuit breakers and a combination of both. Tools will be provided to help comply with the Code.
(1, 1.5 or 2 hours)
Covers the various overcurrent types, focusing on short-circuits or fault currents. We give a background on why short-circuit current is important and cover the applications where knowing the available fault current is critical to comply with the NEC. Videos will demonstrate some common misapplications related to interrupting rating, short-circuit current rating and arc flash. Working examples will guide you through calculations of the available fault current using free online tools.
(1 or 2 hours)
Covers the basics of electrical safety, including shock and arc flash, the role of overcurrent protective devices and safety by design. NFPA 70E will be referenced and suggestions provided to reduce the hazards associated with electrical installations.
(1, 1.5 or 2 hours)
Covers NEC Code requirements for equipment short-circuit current ratings. Marking and documentation requirements are discussed for available fault current for various types of equipment. Tools will be provided to help comply with the Code.
(1, 1.5 or 2 hours)
Covers the motor circuit and various devices that can be used. A thorough explanation will be given as to the proper application of disconnect switches, fuses (branch circuit and supplemental), molded case circuit breakers, motor circuit protectors, combination motor controllers and more. Other devices used in industrial control panels and machinery will also be reviewed, along with common misapplications found in the industry.
(1.5 or 2 hours)
Covers the UL 508A requirements and procedures outlined in Supplement SB to determine the short-circuit current rating of an industrial control panel. Examples and practice problems will be provided to further enhance the concepts. In addition, solutions and resources will be provided to help easily achieve high short-circuit current ratings.
(45-60 minutes)
Covers the basic requirements for series rated systems, including definitions and key requirements per the NEC. Labeling requirements, new versus existing installation comparisons and key considerations for series ratings and limitations will be discussed.
