   GearGard: Frequently asked questions

What is GearGard?

GearGard is a proactive monitoring solution for low-voltage switchgear, designed to enhance the reliability and performance of Magnum™ PXR and Magnum DS low-voltage switchgear by continuously monitoring key environmental factors such as internal temperatures, humidity, dewpoint, smoke, and dust.

GearGard's advanced environmental sensors and customizable notifications can help detect, prevent, and guard against uncertainty, ensuring that equipment operates under optimal conditions.

What environmental factors does GearGard monitor?

GearGard for low-voltage switchgear monitors temperature, humidity, dewpoint, smoke, and dust to ensure that equipment operates under optimal conditions.

  • GearGard alerts users to high temperature on customer connection points
  • GearGard alerts users to high and low ambient temperatures internal to the switchgear
  • GearGard alerts users to high dust levels
  • GearGard alerts users to smoke

How does GearGard notify users of potential issues?

GearGard provides pre-programmed alarms based on IEEE C37.20.1 standards and customizable warnings to alert users when inspection is needed. Notifications can be sent via phone, email, or pager. Alarms are pre-programmed to alert users to conditions that are outside the conditions that switchgear was designed. Warnings are user programmable to allow for sensitivity adjustments for varying environments.

Can GearGard be used for remote monitoring?

Yes, GearGard supports both local and remote monitoring, providing flexibility and peace of mind by ensuring equipment is running smoothly.

Is GearGard compatible with existing switchgear?

GearGard can be retrofitted to protect existing Magnum PXR and Magnum DS switchgear lineups. Contact your local EESS representative to discuss your options.

What additional benefits does GearGard offer?

GearGard actively controls heaters to prevent condensation, provides a history of the operating environment for NFPA 70B compliance, and helps reduce the likelihood of environmental damage. Data is retained in the PXG1000 for up to 3 years to allow for easy NFPA 70B operating environment condition levels for Electrical Maintenance Programs.

How easy is it to install GearGard on existing switchgear?

It comes installed from the factory or done in the aftermarket by our EESS teams.

Can GearGard be integrated with other monitoring systems or software beyond Eaton's PowerXpert Foreseer?

It has not been integrated yet, but if there’s a need, the teams can work together to provide a solution.

What kind of training and support does Eaton provide for users of GearGard? Are there resources available for troubleshooting and maintenance?

There is a quick start guide currently in development to help with initial setup and troubleshooting concerns.

Engineering support you can count on.

With more than 1,500 experts in 60 locations throughout North America, and more around the world, Eaton’s Electrical Engineering Services and Systems team is one of the largest and most experienced service organizations in the industry.
